Surgical adhesives and surgical tapes offer a practical and cost-effective means to simplify a variety of medical procedures. Pressure-sensitive tapes can be used to seal wounds or attach dressings. Specialty films are also available to adhere over incisions after surgery to help repel moisture and protect against infection.

Stick-to-Skin Wearable Devices

Stick-to-skin wearable devices include everything from CGS and cardiac event monitors to motion detection devices for physical therapy. These devices often remain with a patient for a significant period of time, allowing them to go about their daily lives without sacrificing timely medical care.

Because they are often used daily for long periods of time, wearables require skin-safe adhesives that are breathable, sweat-resistant, and flexible enough to move with the body. Conversely, however, they can’t be too harsh or too difficult to remove.

In addition to comfort, the skin-related factors that influence adhesion must also be considered. For instance, natural oils produced by the epidermis will interfere with the adhesion of certain adhesives even on clean skin. Similarly, the skin is constantly shedding old cells and producing new ones, especially in injured areas. These two biological factors combine to cause a build-up of skin and oil that can prematurely weaken a low-quality adhesive.

As such, the wearable adhesive must be moisture-resistant, flexible, strong, and easy to remove—all at the same time. These considerations make wearable adhesives a special challenge for even experienced manufacturers. Given the unique characteristics of human skin, many stick-to-skin wearables use a double-sided adhesive. The skin side uses a flexible, comfortable adhesive, while the medical device attaches to the other side via a much stronger non-toxic adhesive. These two-in-one adhesives are the best option for protecting skin while still ensuring critical health devices remain firmly in place.

Wound Care

Adhesives for Microfluidic Diagnostic Devices

Microfluidic devices are small, intricate devices used to monitor biomarkers such as glucose. They are also used in genetic testing to identify markers associated with cancer and other serious medical concerns.

Microfluidics are often combined with adhesive backings to form test strips or to fit within sample wells. As such, they require durable adhesives that hold up to handling and exposure to various chemical reagents. Microfluidic test strips may also be used in equipment that reaches extremely high or low temperatures, so the adhesives must be able to withstand temperature fluctuations without breaking down and contaminating the sample.

Biomedical and Electrically Conductive Adhesives

A physical therapist applies blue adhesive patches for electro-stimulation. Biomedical adhesives are available in many different formulations to suit the range of materials used in medical device manufacturing. Pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs), which are most commonly used in tapes and skin bandages, are one of the most common varieties. PSAs activate with the application of pressure, simplifying the application process compared to other adhesives that can require heat and time to cure. Also available are electrically conductive adhesives, which are compatible with medical sensors and electrodes. These adhesives may be films or gels and hold devices in place without irritating the skin.

Ostomy Adhesives & Tapes

Ostomy bags serve an important function in diverting and collecting waste from a surgically or medically altered biological system within a patient. These bags are applied directly to the skin using gentle pressure-sensitive adhesives. These specialized adhesives bond securely to the skin to hold the bag and place and protect the skin from exposure to harsh biological fluids. At the same time, these adhesives must be easy to remove and replace regularly without causing irritation. 

Ostomy adhesives and tapes are specially engineered to meet these considerations:

  • Adhesion. Ostomy tapes/adhesives require secure bonding to the skin to hold the bag in place.
  • Absorption. Adhesives that contact the patient’s skin must be able to absorb moisture from the skin without losing its integrity.
  • Erosion resistance. The adhesive must be able to resist erosion caused by effluent for a period longer than the standard use period of the ostomy bag.
  • Flexibility. An adhesive or tape used with an ostomy bag must be flexible enough to accommodate regular patient movement.
  • Ease-of-removal. Given that ostomy bags must be changed regularly, the adhesive must be gentle enough for easy removal, but still strong enough to maintain adhesion for the prescribed length of time.
