What Are the FDA Regulations for Food-Safe Adhesives?
FDA-approved adhesive tapes are those that are considered food safe according to FDA Title 21 CFR 175, which covers the compliant hide glue, hot melt, epoxies, liquid-based glue, silicone adhesives, and pressure-sensitive adhesives like labels. Other regulations concerning substances that may come into contact with food include FDA Title 21 CFR 177 that addresses substances like film backing and resins that could be used in preparing, packaging, processing, treating, sorting, holding, or transporting pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, or food products. These guidelines not only regulate which adhesive products may be used but how they are applied and what type of physical contact is permissible.
According to section 175.105, manufacturers must make sure that food is separated from adhesives by a barrier or separated based on food type. For example, dry food is limited by quantity, and fatty or aqueous foods cannot exceed trace amounts at edges and seams, according to the limits of the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
